Malaysia’s wholesale and retail sales growth accelerates to 6.6% in April, official data show

KUALA LUMPUR (June 11): Malaysia’s wholesale and retail sales accelerated and grew 6.6% in April from a year earlier led by retail sales in non-specialised stores, official data on Tuesday showed.
Wholesale and retail trade totaled RM144.9 billion in April, the Department of Statistics Malaysia said in a statement. The pace of sales growth was faster than the 5.2% year-on-year increase in March. On a month-on-month basis, distributive trade declined 0.6% in April.
The retail sector rose 5.5% to RM63.8 billion and the wholesale segment expanded 4.8% to RM63.8 billion. Sales of motor vehicles meanwhile climbed 18.1% to RM17.3 billion in April.
The year-on-year growth in retail sales was mainly led by non-specialised stores which grew 5.2%. The rise in the wholesale sector was driven by a 4.2% rise in other specialised wholesale. The growth of the motor vehicle segment was fuelled by a 26.5% surge in sales of vehicles followed by parts and accessories.
On a month-on-month basis, retail sales was 1.5% higher though wholesale trade contracted 8.2% and the motor vehicle sector was down 0.4%.
