Menara Merdeka 118 Strengthens Its Position, Sets a Benchmark for Fire and Life Safety Excellence
As an iconic development on both the local and global stage, Menara Merdeka 118 continues to lead the way in safety innovation in Malaysia. The tower received its Fire Certificate (FC) from the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM), signifying that it has met the stringent fire safety requirements and compliance standards prescribed under Malaysian regulations.
The certification reflects the comprehensive and robust fire and life safety framework implemented throughout the development, ensuring that all systems, infrastructure, and operational readiness meet the highest standards required for a building of this scale and complexity.
In line with its commitment to continuous improvement, Menara Merdeka 118 has also implemented the new Automated Fire Monitoring System (SPKA), strengthening its fire safety and emergency response capability through real-time monitoring and enhanced coordination with JBPM, a critical advantage in a complex high-rise environment where preparedness, coordination, and rapid response are essential.
Presenting the Fire Certificate to Menara Merdeka 118, Yang Setia Penolong Kanan Pesuruhjaya Bomba Hj. Hassan ‘As’ari bin Hj. Omar, Director of the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia, Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, said, “The Metropolitan Fire Department, together with the Malaysia Supertall Secretariat (MSS), has taken the lead in ensuring fire safety standards are upheld so that this super high-rise development consistently adheres to world-class fire safety requirements. For a development of this scale, compliance must be supported by a continuous commitment to maintaining
systems, operational readiness, and adherence to safety procedures. The inclusion of systems such as SPKA further enhances preparedness and strengthens coordination during emergencies.”
Dato’ Ir. Ts. Izwan Hasli Mohd Ibrahim, Chief Executive Officer of PNB Merdeka Ventures Sdn Bhd, said, “The Fire Certificate is a significant milestone for Menara Merdeka 118, as it affirms that the building has fulfilled all required fire and life safety standards. As a landmark development, our responsibility extends beyond compliance — it is about ensuring that safety is embedded in every aspect of the building’s design, systems, and operations. The implementation of SPKA further strengthens our fire safety capabilities, providing an additional layer of assurance through enhanced monitoring and more efficient emergency response. As an iconic development, Merdeka 118 should set the standard not only in scale and ambition, but equally in safety. Ultimately, this is about giving our tenants, visitors, and the wider public confidence that when they are in Menara Merdeka 118, they are in an environment that meets world-class standards not only in its facilities, but also in how it is managed and protected.”
Menara Merdeka 118 is also among the key developments supported by the Malaysia Supertall Secretariat (MSS), a newly established fire safety organisation in Asia for buildings exceeding 300 metres. MSS plays an important role in strengthening fire safety and emergency management through strategic collaboration between building owners and JBPM.
This latest recognition adds to Menara Merdeka 118’s growing list of achievements. Most recently, the tower became the first building in Malaysia to receive MD Nexus recognition, positioning it as a platform for high-value digital enterprises supported by strong infrastructure, connectivity, and an integrated ecosystem.
Menara Merdeka 118 has also earned LEED Platinum certification, triple Platinum recognition under GreenRE and the Green Building Index, as well as WELL Core Platinum Certification, the highest recognition under the global WELL Building Standard.
Merdeka 118 continues to strengthen its position as one of Kuala Lumpur’s leading business and lifestyle destinations, distinguished by its integrated precinct offering, seamless connectivity, Grade A office standards, and a strong track record in sustainability, safety, and operational excellence.
