Genting Malaysia submits bid for New York casino licence

The bid was submitted on June 27 in response to the New York State Gaming Commission’s request for applications for up to three commercial casinos in downstate New York, where its Resorts World New York City (RWNYC) is located, Genting Malaysia said in an exchange filing.

KUALA LUMPUR (June 30): Genting Malaysia Bhd (KL:GENM) announced that a formal bid has been submitted for a casino licence in New York as part of a US$5.5 billion (RM23.19 billion) resort development in Queens.

The bid was submitted on June 27 in response to the New York State Gaming Commission’s request for applications for up to three commercial casinos in downstate New York, where its Resorts World New York City (RWNYC) is located, Genting Malaysia said in an exchange filing.

“RWNYC is uniquely positioned to transform itself into a world-class integrated resort destination with a proposed multi-billion-dollar investment in conjunction with its bid,” Genting Malaysia said. “This will drive RWNYC’s next chapter of growth.”

A decision is expected by Dec 1, followed by the issuance of licences by Dec 31, 2025.

In a separate statement, RWNYC touted that its 5.6 million-square-foot project could provide tax revenue as soon as July 2026, promising to launch table game and full-casino slot machine operations within six months of receiving a gaming facility licence.

The integrated resort will feature a total of a 500,000 sq ft gaming floor with 6,000 slots and 800 table games, 2,000 hotel rooms, a 7,000-seat entertainment venue, over 30 food and beverage outlets, large-scale meeting space and other amenities, as well as more than 10 acres of greenspace.

RWNYC said its current workforce will expand from 1,000 existing employees to 5,000 permanent jobs across gaming, hospitality, food and beverage, security, maintenance, and other fields with the new development.

Genting Malaysia’s wholly owned subsidiary Genting New York LLC owns and operates RWNYC, which opened 15 years ago, offering 5,500 slot machines and electronic table games, restaurants and bars, event spaces and a 400-room Hyatt hotel.
