EdgeProp YouthFest 2025: Investment is about preserving wealth, not making quick profits

KUALA LUMPUR (April 23): The goal of investment should be about securing your finances, not to make quick money, said a panellist during a financial literacy event over the weekend.
This was among the points stressed in EdgeProp’s YouthFest 2025, which took place at APW Bangsar on April 19 and 20, addressing key topics like property ownership, financial independence and urban living for young Malaysians. The event provided a platform for discussions on navigating adulthood amid rising living costs and changing job markets.
In one of the sessions on “Growth Mindset & The Power of Financial Clarity,” DoitDuit’s HY Tan stated that young people should prioritise building their active income rather than diving into risky investments. The 27-year-old financial education platform co-founder emphasised that investment is about preserving wealth, not making quick profits.
The session also featured Boost Bank chief executive officer Fozia Amanulla, who brought up the need for financial responsibility and clarity in setting financial goals. She highlighted how Boost Bank can help users automate their savings.
“We try to empower every individual. Our app allows people to automate their savings — create different jars for different goals.
“The key is to start now, even if it’s small. Once you put it aside, you don’t have to think about it anymore,” she said.

Another panellist, singer-songwriter and author Claudia Tan, added insights on how Gen Z is redefining luxury, explaining that it’s now about making conscious spending choices rather than focusing on designer items.
The Visionary Stage also hosted talks on mental wellness, financial clarity and goal-setting.
In the session “Level Up Blueprint — Hacking Goals with Your Brain”, HELP University cognitive psychologist Khor Khai Ling explained how the brain is wired for survival, rather than long-term goals like saving.
Khor said that the brain is naturally focused on immediate rewards, but society pushes us to think ahead.
EPF’s warning on unnominated savings
Meanwhile, the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) relationship advisor, Mohammad Faiez said saving without nominating a beneficiary is like locking your money away with no key.
He raised a red flag over the alarming number of Malaysians who have not designated nominees for their EPF savings despite years of diligent contribution.
“Based on our statistics, 50% of our seven million active members still haven’t nominated anyone. So if anything happens, who’s going to receive your EPF savings?” he asked during his talk on “Smart Money Moves for Young Professionals”.
He further explained that EPF nominations differ for Muslim and non-Muslim members.
“For non-Muslims, the nominee becomes the ‘absolute owner’ of the funds. If someone passes away and lists his or her spouse as a nominee, the spouse becomes the full owner of that money with no restrictions.
“However, for Muslims, the nominee is not the owner of the funds but rather an administrator. Muslim members’ funds must be distributed according to fara’id, or Islamic inheritance law,” he added.
He also explained how easy it is to make a nomination: “You can do it through the EPF app. Just open the app, go to nominations and apply. You can list your spouse, your children, your parents or anyone you trust”.
Interactive booths and exclusive giveaways
Beyond the talks, YouthFest presenting partners, Boost Bank and Sime Darby Property shared a showcase at the Visionary stage to onboard interested homebuyers who use the newly-launched EdgeProp Jar to save up for their downpayment.
All users of the EdgeProp Jar can enjoy 3.3% p.a. daily interest immediately after signing up for the Jar, and an additional 4.7% p.a. daily interest upon signing the sale and purchase agreement for participating Sime Darby Property projects at the event.
Attendees also took part in a SONY PlayStation challenge, completing three game stations and snapping a selfie to redeem exclusive PlayStation merchandise.
